The Classic British Pub Game!With a Hidden Twist.

Shut-the-Box Rules of Play for Shut-the-Boox™

They’re the same game, only ours is in a hollow book safe!

This being a drinking game, these shut-the-box rules for the Public Slybrary’s Shut-the-Boox™ are pretty fluid, therefore, start the game with a drink of an adult beverage.

Gameplay:

Flip all the tiles “open” or up, showing the numbers 1-9. Players take turns by rolling the dice and adding up the pips on said dice. Next, they ”shut” (flip down) one of any combination of the open numbers that equals the total number of pips showing on the dice. I know, that’s a mouthful.

Example:

If the total number of pips is 8, the player may choose any of the following sets of numbers (as long as all of the numbers in the set are “open” or available to be “shut”):

{8} — {7,1} — {6, 2} — {5, 3} — {5, 2, 1} — {4, 3, 1}

The player continues rolling the dice and shutting numbers and once the 7, 8 and 9 are shut, they have the option of throwing a single die. They roll until they can’t shut any more tiles, scoring the sum that are still open. For example, if the numbers 2, 3, and 5 are still open, the player’s score is 10 (2 + 3 + 5 = 10).

Play then passes to the next player. After every player has taken a turn, the player with the lowest score wins and drinks in celebration while the losers drink in consolation (everyone wins!).

Special Conditions:

If a player succeeds in closing all the numbers, he or she is said to have Shut the Boox! The player wins immediately and the losers chug their remaining adult beverage. Cheers!
